''Hoplerythrinus cinereus'' is a species of trahira (family Erythrinidae).〔(''Hoplerythrinus cinereus'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It is a tropical, pelagic freshwater fish which is known from the Island of Trinidad off northeastern Venezuela. Males can reach a maximum standard length of 20.2 cm.〔 ''H. cinereus'' was originally described by T.N. Gill in 1858, as a species of ''Hoplerythrinus''.〔Gill, T.N., 1858 (1750 ) ''Synopsis of the fresh water fishes of the western portion of the island of Trinidad, W. I.'' Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York v. 6 (nos. 10-13): 363-430.〕 It was listed as a valid species of ''Erythrinus'' by Osvaldo Takeshi Oyakawa in 2003.〔Oyakawa, O.
